Yesterday, my boss came in to congratulate me on making our goals for the third quarter.
“You are enough”, he added.
His words pierced me. In a good way.
I have never felt like I am enough. My house is never clean ENOUGH. My strides in health are never ENOUGH. My relationship with my husband and kids is never ENOUGH. My bank account is never ENOUGH. I never put my head on the pillow at night and feel confident that I have done ENOUGH. I am not ENOUGH.
My mind believes that. My scale affirms that. My actions reflect that.
But the Bible contradicts those ideas.
The Apostle Paul had a different struggle. His struggle was that he often rested on his own “enough-ness”, but desired to lean solely on the sufficiency of Jesus. God knew Paul’s tendencies and offered him this great encouragement: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is perfected in weakness…” (2 Corinthians 12:9 – emphasis mine). Paul’s responded to this encouragement with new resolve: “…Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me” (2 Corinthians 12:9).
Somewhere in between my lack of confidence and Paul’s overconfidence is the perfect confidence in God’s adequacy, sufficiency, and enough-ness.
I have had enough of not being enough.
Will you join me in resolving to remember that we are NOT enough – but Jesus is more than enough?
