“Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some REST!” Mark 6:31
This is the sweet invitation that the Lord gives us, or may I be so bold as to say, He commands of us. The word “Command” sounds so harsh, yet the reality and comfort of the commands of Jesus are that they flow from His heart to ours. We can hold on to and believe the truth that He knows what is best for us. He knows what we need!
Maybe the Lord commands us to rest because He is more aware of the fact that rest is one of those things that we won’t do on our own. We will run ourselves ragged to the point of exhaustion, fatigue or an emotional break-down.
Sometimes rest looks like lying down in green pastures listening to the still waters or simply taking a lunch break. Sometimes rest looks like hiding for a few moments in the bathroom while the world around us spins out of control. And sometimes rest looks like being still and remembering the promises of God, His love and saying “no” to the busyness around us. For me, rest also looks like my head on the pillow and not staying up into the wee-hours of the night.
Whatever it looks like for you, take it, receive it and breath it in. It is life-giving to your soul. It is life-giving to your body emotionally, mentaly and physically. God desires it for you and He knows what is best!
May these verses and images be a reminder for each of us to be still, to heed the call and the invitation as He gently holds our hand and leads us into stillness and rest.
