One of my favorite aspects of serving on the Aspire Tour is being an advocate for children in poverty, children waiting to be released from the grip that poverty has on their life and the lies that poverty tells them, like you will never be anything, you will never have enough.
To speak on behalf of these children and their families is my highest honor. I mean that sincerely. I do a lot of things in ministry; music, teaching, hosting events… but releasing children from poverty surpasses them all.
Recently, I was able to take a trip to the Dominican Republic and visit the Compassion headquarters. There, I visited the local churches, I went into the homes of those whose lives are being impacted by the work of Compassion International through the local church and most exciting for me was that I got to visit my own sweet Compassion child, Jasili, who I personally support financially, emotionally and spiritually.
It had to be the most surreal moment for me. As I walked down the road to meet her, I was nervous, excited and filled with anticipation. The moment I saw her, I thought to myself…”Wow, she is real. This packet that I had, this picture, was a real child and here I am meeting her in person.”
Within a few minutes I saw her transform from an incredibly shy little girl into a girl who didn’t want to leave my side. I shared words of hope and encouragement with her and her mother. I saw where she laid her head each night, a bed that she shared with 4 other people. I saw her little dining table that was next to the toilet. I saw her smile.
It was more than I could have imagined, but the one thing that caught me unexpectedly was how much saying good-bye to her and leaving would rip my heart out. You see, through this sponsorship, I have chosen to love her, to pray for her, to mentor and disciple her and in that, I have given her a piece of my heart.
I am so honored to have left that piece in the Dominican Republic as I know it will draw me back. It will draw me back to pray, it will draw me back to write, It will draw me into a relationship with a beautiful little girl that will not only impact her life and the lives of those around her, it will impact mine. She will break the cycle of poverty, she will be released, she will be reminded of how much she is loved.
What an honor we have to speak into someone’s life. The invitation is open for you too to make a difference in someone life. And if you are reading this, just know that it starts with a click. So go ahead, CLICK this link and begin: The ASPIRE Compassion International Sponsorship Link
